How To Support Black People

Black Lives Matter is an important movement. Before I get comments about “All Lives Matter.” We have said we know all lives matter but right now we’re talking about Black lives. We’re saying that Black lives matter because we are getting killed by police at alarming rates. And we deal with systemic racism daily. I promise you there isn’t one Black person that isn’t reminded of their race every day.

I’m proud of the protests that I have seen around the country. Creating the biggest Civil Rights Movement in history. That’s amazing! To see people come together and recognize the value we can bring to the community. I know that some of the protests have turned into looting. But for the most part, they have been peaceful and are continuing to be. If you’re more concerned about the looting of Chanel than the death of a person then you need to check yourself. Chanel will be fine. I do want to put a disclaimer that I don't support looting and feel for any small businesses affected. Especially in minority communities.

I want this momentum to continue. I want us to always rally together to put pressure on politicians and the government for real change. Remember that a lot can change at the local levels of government. See what is going on in your state and what measures or reform to support.

If you can’t protest that’s ok. You can share resources, donate to organizations, sign petitions, send emails, write letters. Follow conscious accounts on social media that teach and share relevant information. This is the opportunity to grow together. If you have children begin to introduce more diverse toys and books into their world. Teach them young. To them, a toy is a toy. But it can impact how they see the world in the long run. This isn’t a one size fits all on how you support. Don’t let others shame you for not supporting the way they do.

The number one way you can help this movement is by buying from Black-owned businesses. A lot of times your favorite items and staples are at Black-owned companies. Buying from these companies helps them grow wealth for their family and community. It helps to uplift us! Since a lot of these companies are family-owned. The next time that you need an item question if you can buy from a Black-owned company.

If you’re ordering food see what Black-owned restaurants and food trucks you have around you. It will surprise you to see how many are available.

Once you find Black-owned companies that you like. Email and call stores so that they begin to carry these items. Pumping money in the Black community will show that there is a demand for our products. This will in term give us the opportunities that we have struggled to achieve.

I have bought from Black-owned businesses before but I’m making it a point to support them more. I challenge you to do the same. I have a lot of goodies coming and I will be sharing what I bought with you in an upcoming haul.

I will always be vocal about my support of the Black Lives Matter movement. This year has been a tough one. But I want to look back and know it was a pivotal year in change for the Black community. You can visit my Instagram for more Black Lives Matter resources and Black-owned Companies.
